Village staff and the design team have given cafeful consideration to identifying the best approach to constructing the Lockport Street improvements while balancing the importance of maintaining traffic flow on Lockport Street while also recognizing the need for the public, including emergency service providers, to navigate through the downtown. One lane of travel -- eastbound traffic -- will be maintained on Lockport Street during the project, while the opposite lane will be closed to allow for construction. Lockport Street will be closed to westbound traffic from James Street to Route 59. Alternate routes for westbound traffic include Route 126 (Main Street) and 143rd Street, which was recently designated as U.S. Route 30. Village staff currently anticipates that the closure and detour of westbound Lockport Street will begin on March 24, 2008. The project is scheduled for substantial completion by October 31, 2008.

Click on the attached Detour and Alternate Route Map for an illustration of the permitted and restricted turn movements associated with the detour.

A detailed summary of permissible traffic movements at the major intersections is provided below:

Lockport Street-James Street
Vehicles heading north on James Street will be able to turn right (east) or left (west) on Lockport Street. During the summer months, after the regular school year has concluded, the left-turn from James Street onto westbound Lockport Street will be prohibited to allow for the construction of the segment of the project between James Street and Route 126 (Main Street). Cars traveling east on Lockport Street will be able to turn right onto soutbound James Street at all times. There will be no westbound traffic allowed on Lockport Street approaching the James Street intersection.

Lockport Street-Fox River Street
Vehicles heading north on Fox River Street will be allowed only a right-turn onto Lockport Street. The left-turn from Fox River Street onto westbound Lockport Street will be prohibited during construction. Vehicles heading north on Des Plaines Street approaching Lockport Street will have the option of turning right (east) onto Lockport Street or traveling north through the intersection and continuing north on Des Plaines Street (toward the Fire Station). Likewise, vehicles traveling south on Des Plaines Street approaching Lockport Street may continue south through the intersection or turn left (east) onto Lockport Street, but will not be able to turn right (west) onto Lockport Street. The Lockport-Des Plaines intersection will remain open to cross-traffic (north-south) for the majority of the project. Limited closures of the intersection will be required to construct intersection improvements. The left-turn from northbound Des Plaines onto westbound Lockport Street will be prohibited during construction. Cars traveling east on Lockport Street will be able to turn right onto soutbound Des Plaines Street at all times. There will be no westbound traffic allowed on Lockport Street approaching the Des Plaines Street intersection.

Eastbound traffic must either continue straight (east, toward Bartlett) or turn right onto southbound Route 59.

Cars headed west on Lockport Street approaching Route 59 (in front of Plainfield Academy) must either turn left (south) or right (north) onto Route 59. It will not be possible to continue west on Lockport Street west of Route 59.
